SISSI

GENERAL INFORMATION
Sissi is a lovely, friendly and quiet fishing village with a pretty natural harbour, a serpentine coastline with its beautifully wild and rocky seashore enhanced by its four pretty coves with sand and pebble beaches surrounded by beautiful fields of olive trees. Here you can really enjoy the Cretan way of life.

The landscape is a delightful mix of sea and mountains. There are small, clean and romantic beaches, paths for bikers and for those who prefer walking, the beautiful meandering roads of the village and surrounding countryside.

East of the village lie the three beautiful beaches, Boufos with its fine sand, the small, romantic beach of Avlaki and Kalimera Kriti, large and sandy, accessible only on foot using the scenic footpath.

Another sandy beach lies west of the village, in the smaller community of Ag. Varvara.

In the centre of the village, is the small picturesque port, resembling a big natural swimming pool, with its own small sandy beach. The local fishermen still moor their boats in the attractive harbour.

Around the port are many lovely tavernas, restaurants, (cocktail-)bars and pubs. Some of them are open all year round. Sissi is small, hospitable and quiet, but full of life. Sissi is a resort that is perfect for couples and families. It is not so wild and lively as Malia or Hersonissos but it does have has its fair share of nightlife if you want it.

Sissi offers accommodation that serves all tastes, with hotels of every category (rooms, studios, apartments) with 3500 available beds, and a campsite. There are many small family-run hotels offering the traditional warm and friendly Cretan welcome.

AMENITIES
There are a few streets with small shops, supermarkets, bakeries, butchers, bars and restaurants that are open all year round.
During the summer season a wider range of shops opens, including gift-shops, car/bike hire companies, cafe, laundry services, bars and restaurants.

BUS
There is twice-daily bus service to Agios Nikolaos and Heraklion. During the summer season the bus service is more frequent. A 3 km walk away are the bus stops on the national road of Crete, where a 30 minute bus service serves both centres and further a field to Ierapetra and Sitia.

MEDICAL SERVICES
Sissi has a medical centre, a pharmacy and a dentist. The nearest hospitals are in Neapolis and Agios Nikolaoos.

SCHOOL
In Sissi there is a primary school for children 4 – 12 years old.  After 12 years old the children will have to go to either Malia or Neapolis for secondary school.

OFFICIAL BUSINESS
Sissi belongs to the Municipality of Neapolis, so that’s where all paperwork will have to be done. There is the main post office, town hall, tax office, police station, and KEP. KEP is the Citizen Service Centre and is very useful for the local inhabitants; Greeks and foreigners can get here information and help about all administrative processes.

GOUVES

GENERAL INFORMATION
Gouves is actually divided into two areas, there is the resort of Kato Gouves and there is the upper part about 3 km from the sea.

Kato Gouves is a modern tourist resort with beautiful sandy beaches and a small marina. There are large modern hotels, family apartments, many tavernas, restaurants, shops, sports- and recreation centres, car/bike hire companies, internet cafe, laundry services, photo development, bars and clubs. Most of the tourist facilities close from the end of October until the beginning of April.

Most of the properties we have for sale, are in the upper part of the village, Gouves, about 3 km from the sea. This upper part is untouched by tourism. The main village square has a beautiful church and 4 traditional kafeneions/tavernas. It is a traditional village, quiet but very much alive. During the whole year the local kafeneions are full with locals (Greeks and foreigners). One of the kafeneions serves as the meeting point with the postman!
The scenery surrounding the village is breathtaking with its impressive high mountains and rural and sea views whichever direction you look.

AMENITIES
There is a mini market and a bakery. During the summer season all amenities are available in Kato Gouves. The rest of the year most people will go to Heraklion as that is only 20 minutes drive away.

BUS
Once a day a bus passes the village. At the intersection between Gouves – Kato Gouves is a 30-minute bus service to Heraklion and to the other side Hersonissos and further.

MEDICAL SERVICES
In Gouves is there is a doctor’s office for the people who have the farmers insurance. The rest will have to go to Heraklion or to the medical centres in Kato Gouves (which is only open during the summer season) or Hersonissos (which is open all year round).

SCHOOL
In Gouves there is a primary school for children 4 – 12 years old. After 12 years old the children will have to go to Heraklion (by school bus).

OFFICIAL BUSINESS
The town hall of Gouves is based in Gournes at the old American base.
